More Information

Are you a Pilgrims Hospices #StayHome hero? Turn your lockdown bike ride into a virtual traversal of the famous 100 mile Challenge route!

A favourite fixture in the East Kent cycling calendar for a number of years, the Pilgrims Hospices Cycle Challenge provides participants with the opportunity to raise money for a great cause whilst challenging their cycling endurance. Typically held in late April or early May, this year’s event has been postponed until 23rd August because of the spread of Corona Virus.

Here at Virtual Rides we want to do our bit to help Pilgrims Hospices raise much needed funds to plug the fundraising gap until life returns to normal. So we are giving you the opportunity, wherever you are, to take part in a virtual version of the famous Pilgrims Hospices Cycle Challenge. Over 3 weeks you will traverse 100 miles and help raise money for a great local charity.

Prizes for taking part

Every participant on any of the three legs will receive an exclusive digital ‘badge’ that can be shared on social media and elsewhere to show your support for Pilgrims Hospices. Complete all 3 legs and you will receive an official Pilgrims Hospices Cycle Challenge medal in the post after the event!

How it works

Like any virtual ride, you can use any route you like in order to reach your chosen mileage. Under the current lockdown conditions, we strongly suggest you follow government advice and cycle a route that starts and finishes at your home to avoid any unnecessary travel. Pilgrims Hospices have also asked us that you do not use the virtual ride to pop in to any of their hospices, even if you are passing by. The safety of the patients and staff is paramount, and your participation in the virtual ride is the best means of showing your support.

So if you have a favourite ride around local country lanes, or cycle paths through your town or city, or even a turbo-trainer or exercise bike at home, then please use those to do your virtual ride. You can do the mileage in one go, or over a number of days. All that matters is you turn the pedals to cover the distance. We’re not even going to ask you to verify your mileage, so if you’re a bit over, or under, then that’s fine by us.

The Cycle Challenge route has evolved over the years to cater for greater numbers of participants, and to ensure the safety and comfort of the patients at all hospices. Our virtual version, however, can follow any route we wish. So I hope you are ready to use your imagination to take on some of the iconic Cycle Challenge highlights from years past!

Week 3 (17th May – 23rd May) – Margate to Canterbury – 40 miles

You’ll need to work out your own, local equivalent route for this leg. Strava (registration required) has a very useful route-planning tool you can use for this. Whilst riding your route you may wish to imagine certain highlights of the Cycle Challenge from previous years…

Refreshed and invigorated at the Margate hospice, the last leg back to Canterbury beckons. Highlights include:

  • Traversing the Thanet flats, winding through country lanes with high hedges
  • Arriving at picturesque Stodmarsh, to be faced with the last significant climb of the ride
  • Reaching the outskirts of Canterbury, with a thrilling downhill into the city centre

Reaching the finish in Canterbury, whether at the hospice or at the new base in the university, always gives a huge sense of achievement. Why not pop a bottle of something special to celebrate finishing the Virtual Cycle Challenge!
